If you feel like you missed out on orthodontic treatment as a teenager, don’t worry, it is not too late! Orthodontic treatments have been growing in popularity for adults over the years and options are better now than they ever have been before. Statistically, one in four orthodontic patients are adults. No matter how far into adulthood you are, or what your needs may be, there is a treatment option that is right for you.

Whether you opt for the traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, or invisalign treatment, there is a treatment option that will suit your needs and your desires. One benefit to having orthodontic treatment as an adult rather than a teenager or kid is that your teeth are done growing in and have eased into their position. You can be confident that aligning your teeth as an adult will have lasting impact and that you will be more diligent in their care than you would have been at 15.

Traditional Braces For Adults

The most common treatment option for all age ranges is the traditional metal brace. These are the typical braces you think of when you imagine someone with braces that are made up of metal brackets and wires. Brackets are attached to the teeth using dental cement. Wires are then threaded through the brackets and held together by small, circular bands that hold the wire together with the bracket. Bands are typically changed at every appointment, about every three to six weeks and may come in a variety of colors to choose from. Adults who opt for traditional braces typically have them on anywhere from 18 months to three years.

Ceramic Braces For Adults

Ceramic braces are similar to traditional braces in that they are held on with brackets and a wire runs across the front of teeth and gently moves the teeth into straight positions over time. The main benefit to having ceramic braces as an adult is that they are hardly noticeable, since they are lighter in color than traditional metal braces. The color can even be matched to your teeth!

While metal braces can be used on kids who might not have all of their adult teeth, ceramic braces are typically used primarily on adult patients. Adults often prefer to have ceramic braces as an available option so their orthodontic treatment can be more discreet. Ceramic braces are less noticeable and still provide the level of treatment that traditional metal braces do.

Invisalign Clear Aligner For Adults

Orthodontic Treatment Options For Adults

As the name suggests, invisalign is a treatment option that invisibly aligns your teeth. With the convenience of retainers that can be taken in and out for eating, brushing teeth or other activities which you may not want a retainer in for, invisalign also provides the function of traditional and ceramic braces, while being nearly invisible.

Invisalign is a fantastic treatment option for aligning your teeth if you are a person who:

  • Speaks to people on a daily basis
  • Gives presentations or speeches
  • Interacts with the public
  • Are a working professional

Invisalign has become increasingly popular among adults due to its invisible nature. Invisalign can provide the smile you desire while leaving the hassle of traditional braces at the door. Aligners may  need to be routinely checked for proper fit, but otherwise do not require the attention and treatment traditional and ceramic braces do.
